
Why Won't My Printer Print Black When the Cartridge Is Full?
Five fixable causes — and the honest point where a cheap inkjet isn't worth the ink it takes to unclog

A printer that refuses to print black when the cartridge is full is almost always a clogged printhead, the wrong black channel being used, a cartridge-recognition error, air in the ink line, or a grayscale setting routing black through the color cartridges instead. The fix depends on the cause, and the first step is always to print a nozzle check pattern to see what's actually reaching the page.
Run a Nozzle Check Pattern First
Before you do anything else, print the nozzle check pattern from your printer's maintenance menu. On most inkjets this is under Settings > Maintenance > Print Nozzle Check or similar. The pattern shows a grid of lines for each color channel. If the black lines are missing, faint, or streaky, the nozzles are clogged. If the pattern is perfect but your document still prints without black, the problem is settings or the wrong black channel.
Clogged Printhead Nozzles (Most Common)
Inkjet nozzles clog when the printer sits idle and ink dries in the microscopic jets. This is the single most common reason a full cartridge won't print.
The fix: Run the standard head cleaning cycle from the maintenance menu. Print another nozzle check. If it improves but isn't perfect, run one more cleaning cycle. If two standard cleans don't solve it, try a deep clean — but understand that a deep clean uses a lot of ink from all cartridges, sometimes a third of their capacity, to force solvent through the nozzles under pressure.
Diminishing returns: If a deep clean doesn't work, a second deep clean rarely does. You're now burning more ink than the cartridge holds just trying to clear the blockage. On a cheap inkjet — anything under a hundred dollars — this is often the point where the math stops making sense. A set of replacement cartridges plus the ink you just burned cleaning can cost more than a new printer. It's infuriating, but it's the business model.
Photo Black vs Matte Black (Epson and Some Canon Models)
Some photo-oriented inkjets have two black cartridges: photo black for glossy paper and matte black for plain paper. The printer switches between them based on the paper type setting, and only one channel is active at a time. If you have a full matte black cartridge but selected glossy paper in the print dialog, the printer tries to use the photo black channel — which may be empty or clogged.
The fix: Check your paper type setting in the print dialog. If it says Photo Paper or Glossy and you're printing on plain paper, change it to Plain Paper or Matte. Print the nozzle check again to confirm the correct black channel is firing.
Cartridge Not Recognized or Chip Error
Printers use chips on the cartridge to track ink levels and authenticate the cartridge. A full cartridge that the printer doesn't recognize won't print, even if it's seated correctly. This happens with third-party cartridges, refills, or sometimes after a cartridge has been removed and reinserted.
The fix: Remove the black cartridge and reseat it firmly. Look for any protective tape or plastic still covering the chip contacts. If you're using a third-party or refilled cartridge, the chip may not be compatible or may need to be reset with a chip resetter tool. If the printer still shows the cartridge as empty or missing, try a genuine OEM cartridge to rule out a chip issue.
Air in the Ink Line After a Refill
If you've refilled the cartridge yourself or installed a continuous ink system, air bubbles in the line can block ink flow even when the reservoir is full.
The fix: Run a standard head cleaning cycle to purge the air. If that doesn't work, some refill kits include a syringe to manually prime the cartridge by drawing ink through the nozzles from the top. This is fiddly work and not worth attempting unless you're committed to the refill route.
Grayscale or Black Ink Only Settings
Some printers have a grayscale mode that composites black from cyan, magenta, and yellow instead of using the black cartridge — originally a workaround when black runs out, but sometimes left on by accident. Other printers have a "black ink only" mode that does the opposite and won't print if color cartridges are low, even if black is full.
The fix: Open your print dialog and check for grayscale, black-and-white, or "use color cartridges for black" settings. Turn them off. Also check the printer's front-panel menu for any mode that overrides cartridge use. Print a test page.
When to Stop
If you've run two cleaning cycles, checked every setting, reseated the cartridge, and printed multiple nozzle checks with no improvement, you're facing a printhead that's either permanently clogged or failing. Replacement printheads exist for some models — mostly higher-end Epsons and Canons — and cost fifty to a hundred dollars plus labor if they're not user-replaceable. For a budget inkjet, that's new-printer territory. The cartridge is full, but the nozzles are the gatekeeper, and sometimes the gate is closed for good.
