The Three Zones USPS Machines Read
Return address zone (top-left). Place your return address in the upper-left corner, starting no lower than 0.5 inches from the top and no more than 0.5 inches from the left edge. Use at least 8-point font, though 10 or 11 point is safer for reliability. The machine reads this first to identify the sender if the piece cannot be delivered.
Recipient address zone (center). The delivery address goes in the center of the envelope, positioned between 1 inch and 2.75 inches from the top, and between 1 inch and 2.75 inches from the left edge. Use at least 10-point font; 12-point is standard and reads cleanly. This is the primary scanning zone. The address must be left-aligned, not centered on the page.
Barcode zone (bottom-right). Leave the lower-right area of the envelope blank—specifically the area from 0.5 inches to 1.25 inches from the bottom and 0.5 inches to 1.25 inches from the right edge. USPS machines print an Intelligent Mail barcode here after scanning the address. Writing, stamps, or graphics in this zone interfere with barcode printing and force the piece into manual processing.

Avoid apartment numbers in the street address line if possible; put them on a separate line above the street address, or use the format "123 Main St Apt 4B" on one line.

What Still Works (But Slower)

Stamps placed in the barcode zone do not prevent delivery, but they cover the space where the barcode prints, forcing manual handling.
