How to Mail Something Without Going to the Post Office

Five ways to ship letters and packages from home — and the printer, scale, or prep work each one actually requires

A long line of people waiting at the post office

You can mail letters and packages without visiting the post office by using USPS Click-N-Ship to print postage at home, scheduling a free carrier pickup, dropping prepaid items in a blue collection box, using a retail partner like UPS Store or Staples, or hiring an online print-and-mail service. The catch: most methods still require a printer for the label, a scale for anything over 10 ounces, or both.

Print Postage at Home with Click-N-Ship

USPS Click-N-Ship lets you buy and print postage for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and some international services directly from usps.com. You enter the destination, weigh the package, pay online, and print the label on plain paper. Tape it to the box, schedule a pickup or drop it in a collection box, and you're done.

What you need: A printer, a scale accurate to the ounce, and packing tape. The label prints as a PDF. If you guess the weight wrong and underpay postage, USPS will bill you or return the package.

Click-N-Ship does not cover First-Class Package Service under one pound or standard letters — those require a trip to the counter or a commercial postage service like Stamps.com or Pirate Ship, which work the same way but support more mail classes.

Schedule a Free Carrier Pickup

If your regular mail carrier delivers to your address, you can schedule a pickup online at usps.com or through the USPS Mobile App. The carrier will take prepaid packages and outgoing mail with postage already attached during their normal delivery route. Pickup is free and available Monday through Saturday.

What you need: Postage already on the item — either printed at home or from stamps you applied yourself. The carrier will not accept packages without postage, weigh items, or sell you postage at the door. For packages, you also need the tracking number or label from Click-N-Ship or another postage provider.

This works well if you have a regular delivery route. If you live in a building with a central mailbox or a PO Box, carrier pickup may not be available.

Drop It in a Blue Collection Box

USPS collection boxes accept stamped letters, prepaid packages that fit through the slot, and anything with a printed Click-N-Ship label. The carrier empties the box on the schedule posted on the door — usually once or twice a day.

What you can drop: First-Class letters and flats with stamps, Priority Mail with a printed label, anything under 10 ounces with the correct postage. You cannot drop packages over 10 ounces in a collection box unless they carry a printed Click-N-Ship label or were created through a USPS.com account — this is a security rule that has been in place since 2007.

What you need: Postage already affixed. No scale required for letters under one ounce with a Forever stamp, but you are responsible for correct postage. If you underpay, the item gets returned or the recipient pays postage due.

Collection boxes do not accept Certified Mail, Registered Mail, or anything requiring a receipt. Those need a clerk or a carrier pickup with the right forms.

Use a Retail Partner

Authorized USPS retail partners — UPS Stores, Staples, Office Depot, and some grocery and drug stores — sell postage, weigh packages, and accept drop-offs. They are not post offices, but they function as one for most transactions.

What you need: The item and payment. They have scales and printers. You wait in a different line, sometimes shorter, sometimes not. Hours are often more convenient than post office lobbies.

These locations cannot process every USPS service — Certified Mail, money orders, and PO Box transactions usually require a real post office. Call ahead if you need something beyond basic postage.

Hire an Online Print-and-Mail Service

If you do not own a printer or do not want to pack and label anything, services like Have It Printed, Click2Mail, and others will print your document, stuff and address the envelope, apply postage, and deposit it with USPS. You upload a PDF or design the piece online, enter a mailing list, and pay per piece.

What you need: A digital file and a mailing list. No printer, no scale, no trip to the post office, no stamps. You pay for printing, postage, and service fees in one transaction.

This makes sense for bulk mailings, recurring invoices, or anything you would rather not handle yourself. It does not make sense for a single personal letter you already wrote by hand, or for shipping a physical object — those still need one of the methods above.

What About Packages That Need a Signature or Proof of Delivery?

Certified Mail, Registered Mail, and some insurance options require a receipt from a clerk or a carrier. You can schedule a carrier pickup for these if you print the label and forms through USPS.com and have the right service selected — the carrier will scan and provide proof at pickup. But if you need to hand the item to a human and watch them scan it, you still need a post office or a retail partner.

The Real Constraint Is the Printer and the Scale

Every method except retail partners and online print-and-mail assumes you can print a label and weigh the item accurately. If you do not have a printer, your options narrow to retail partners, collection boxes with stamps for letters only, or paying someone else to handle it end-to-end. If you guess the weight wrong, USPS returns the package or bills you later, which is slower and more annoying than just knowing the weight up front.

A basic postal scale costs less than three trips to the post office in wasted time. A printer is harder to justify if all you do is mail, but easier if you also print other things. The calculation is personal, but the constraint is real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drop a package in a USPS collection box without going to the post office?

Yes, but only if the package weighs 10 ounces or less, or if it has a printed Click-N-Ship label from a USPS.com account. Packages over 10 ounces without a USPS-printed label must be handed to a carrier or clerk due to security rules.

Do I need a printer to mail something from home?

For most methods, yes. Click-N-Ship, carrier pickup, and commercial postage services all require you to print a label. The exceptions are using stamps on letters dropped in a collection box, or paying a retail partner or online print-and-mail service to handle it for you.

Is USPS carrier pickup really free?

Yes, if your address receives regular mail delivery and your package already has prepaid postage. The carrier picks it up during their normal route at no extra charge. Pickup is not available for all addresses, particularly those with central mailboxes or PO Boxes.

Can I mail Certified Mail without going to the post office?

You can schedule a carrier pickup for Certified Mail if you create and print the label and forms through USPS.com. The carrier will scan it at pickup and provide proof of mailing. If you need to watch the clerk scan it in person, you still need a post office or retail partner.
